Identity Theft & Taxes

Most individuals are aware to contact the 3 credit bureaus when experiencing credit fraud. Place a free, one-year fraud alert by contacting one of the three credit bureaus. That company must tell the other two.

From a tax standpoint, the following should be done with the IRS:


Complete IRS Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f14039.pdf to alert the IRS that there is a potential tax-related identity theft issue or call 800-908-4490. For additional information, see IRS Publication 5027, Identity Theft Information for Taxpayer, which can be found at irs.gov.
